Dollar Facts And Figures
- The Continental Congress tried to create a Dollar coin in 1776 with moderate success.
- A One Dollar Coin was proposed by Thomas Jefferson in 1783.
- Thomas Jefferson again proposed a One Dollar coin in 1790 with a proposed weight of 376 grains of fine silver.
- Alexander Hamilton, then Secretary of the Treasury, proposed that the weight be set at 371 1/4 grains of fine silver. This fine silver content was not changed until 1803.
- Thomas Jefferson halted the production of One Dollar Coins in the early part of 1804.
- Seated Liberty Dollars were first struck in 1836.
- The Coinage Act of 1873 eliminated the traditional One Dollar Coin and replaced it with the Trade Dollar.
- The Morgan Dollar began production is 1878.
- Over 270 million Dollar Coins were melted as a result of the Pittman Act of 1918.
- Production of One Dollar Coins ceased in 1904 and did not start again until 1921.
- The last Peace Dollars were struck in 1935. That is until 1964 when the Denver Mint struck over 300,000 1964-D Peace Dollars. All of these were believed to have been destroyed but rather shabby bookkeeping at the mint has fostered rumours of the survival of some pieces.
